At 15 Wassily enrolled in the University of Leningrad. However he was imprisoned for anti-Communist activities and finally left Russia in 1925 to pursue his doctorate in Berlin.

He is pictured here in 1929 in a photo by E. Czermichowski, the year he received his doctorate. He is 24 years old.
