IIOA Presidents

The Presidents of the IIOA are elected by the Council of the IIOA.

For many years, the President was selected from the nine elected Council Members of the IIOA, of which three Council Members were elected every three years for overlapping nine-year terms.

In 2013, new statutes were approved reflecting the rule changes for election to the Council. In particular, the nine-year term for Council Members was reduced to three years, which was achieved over a six-year transition period (2013-2019). The role of the Council appointing the President to a three-year term after each general election remained.

In 2017, the eligibility rules for consideration for the President were changed to provide clarity and a larger pool of candidates. The pool of candidates eligible reflected those members of the IIOA who were currently serving or had served as elected members on Council within the past 10 years. If the elected President was not a current member of Council, he or she would be appointed to Council for the term of his or her service. The President may be re-elected only once and the three-year term for the President remained.

In 2021, the IIOA Council held its first ever open competition for the election of the IIOA President from the eligible list of candidates with the term starting in 2022 - there were two candidates. A similar process was applied in 2024, whereby a three-way open competition was held for the election of the IIOA President with the term starting in 2025.
